Why A Diverse Microbiome Is Essential To Your Health
Your body has more microbial cells than human cells. Did you know that?
Crazy, right!
Over the past however many years, we have focused attention on being anti-bacterial-this and anti-bacterial-that.
In reality, our body NEEDS these microbes, and many of them to be healthy! In fact, the more diverse our microbe variety, the better, in most cases.
And I am not kidding about that at all.
Not ALL microbes, bacteria and viruses are good for us, we know this. Hence, the reason we have antibacterial products all over the marketplace. The fact of the matter, however, is that many beneficial bacteria and other microbes are 100% necessary for us to live healthy lives.
There are 1000s of beneficial bacteria lining our guts at this very moments that help to digest food, regulate hormones, allow for the absorption and creation of essential nutrients AND regulate our immune system.
Our gut is, in fact, the central organ that connects to multiple body systems, such as the skin, the brain, the liver, the immune system and more.
The gut may also be considered the “root” of many illnesses and is associated with autoimmune disorders, autism, mood disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, obesity, just to name a few.
People with gut problems, may actually have these signs:
- Weight gain or loss
- GI discomfort
- Vitamin deficiency
- Food sensitivities
- Rashes
- Fatigue
- Memory or mood disorder
There are MANY ways to affect our gut “microbiome” or “microbiota”…. One of the most obvious ways is by the food we eat or not eat. When you eat, that food directs goes to the bacteria in the gut to be processed. Certain foods feed certain bacteria. So, depending on what you eat, you are either helping or hindering your gut microbiome.
When you eat sugary foods, for instance, you are feeding sugar hungry bacteria and they multiply. These bacteria then go on to affect gene expression and processes throughout the body. Ultimately, what you eat directly affects your health!!
